A must have book for the water color artist!
First Edition, copyright 1990. Watson-Guptill Publications. Hardback, 144 pages.
This is a hard-to-find 1st edition hardback in very good condition. DJ has some shelf ware, binding is like new and interior pages are very good.
I purchased this book new when it was published and it has been well taken care of in a smoke free home; it is a very interesting book, the lavish photographs and detailed instructions will inspire you!
Maxine Masterfield is a master water color artist who is gracious enough to share her amazing experimental techniques.
Each chapter introduces a new technique inspired by some aspect of nature. Many of these innovative methods closely emulate those of nature itself to achieve strikingly similar visual textures.
In her sand paintings, for instance, Masterfield uses sand as a resist to sprayed-on liquid watercolors, creating rippled patterns like those on a beach.
In solar painting, pigment deposited in liquid form is allowed to evaporate, settling in patterns that are controlled partly by the artist and partly by the sun.
Other novel painting methods include working with various kinds of fibers; using tissue paper to create translucent images reminiscent of quartz and other crystals; and layering paintings in collage-like ways or weaving them together.
This fascinating text is supplemented by clear, step-by-step demonstrations and inspiring nature photographs.
Masterfield believes that staying in tune with nature's rhythms releases any artist's creative energy, letting the work flow more freely and enhancing the finished results. Throughout the book she encourages artists to collaborate with nature by remaining open to the visual possibilities of seemingly random events occurring on the painting surface--to see what nature itself has contributed, and what it may inspire.
