Steamer Hendrick Hudson sterling silver souvenir spoon.

The side-wheel Hudson River excursion steamer Hendrick Hudson was built in 1906 by the Marvel Shipbuilding Company at Newburgh, NY, for the Hudson River Day Line. The steamer's steel hull was 400 feet long overall, with a beam of 45.1 feet at the gunwales and 82 feet over the guards. Its depth in the hold was 13.4 feet, and the draft was 7.5 feet. The Hendrick Hudson was powered by a 3-cylinder compound direct-acting engine of 6200 horsepower. Licensed to carry 5500 passengers, the Hendrick Hudson operated on the New York City to Albany run until 1948. In 1951 the steamer was towed to Philadelphia and broken up.

A Hudson River Day Line brochure boasted: "Day Line steamers are of steel construction, swift and exceptionally well appointed. They are famous for the beauty of their lines. Built entirely for first-class passengers and carrying no freight, they cater exclusively to the safety, comfort and convenience of their passengers." The Hendrick Hudson steamer was in service over 40 years, an extraordinary length of service for a passenger ship. This means there are many people alive today who had the experience of traveling on a sidewheel steam engine ship. We hope this spoon brings back fond memories.

The sterling souvenir spoon probably dates back to 1915 or thereabouts. We have left it in the condition we found it, unpolished. The bowl is goldwashed. The spoon is 3 1/4 inches long with a sailing ship, anchor and rope at top and a figural fish handle. The spoon says, "Steamer Hendrick Hudson."
