On the Making of Pinocchio

Dick Jones (born February 25, 1927) is an American actor who achieved some success as a child and as a young adult, especially in B-Westerns and television. He is best known as the voice of Pinocchio in the 1940 Walt Disney film.

In 1940, he had one of his most prominent (though invisible) roles, as the voice of Pinocchio in Walt Disney's animated film of the same name. Jones attended Hollywood High School and at 15, took over the role of Henry Aldrich on the hit radio show The Aldrich Family.

He learned carpentry and augmented his income with jobs in that field. He served in the Army in Alaska during the final months of World War II. Gene Autry, who before the war had cast Jones in several Westerns, put him back to work in films and particularly in television, on programs produced by Autry's company.

Now billed as Dick Jones, the handsome young man starred as Dick West, sidekick to the Western hero known as The Range Rider, in a TV series that ran for 76 episodes in 1951 (and for decades in syndication).  Gene Autry gave Jones his own series, Buffalo Bill Jr. (1955), which ran for 42 episodes on NBC. Jones continued working in films throughout the 1950s, then retired and entered the business world.

Story of  Pinocchio - A wooden puppet, Pinocchio, is brought to life by the Blue Fairy, with the promise that he can become a real boy if he proves himself worthy. Pinocchio is led astray by the wicked Honest John and his companion Gideon, who turn him over to an evil puppeteer, Stromboli. Pinocchio is sent to Pleasure Island, where wicked boys are turned into donkeys, but he escapes with the aid of his friend and conscience, Jiminy Cricket, and eventually redeems himself by saving his father, Geppetto, who has been swallowed by Monstro, the whale. The Blue Fairy rewards Pinocchio by turning him into a real boy. From the original story by Carlo Collodi.

The film is felt by many film historians to be the most technically perfect of all the Disney animated features.

A Sericel is a serigraphy process that involves silk-screening each individual color to the cel, one at a time. Every distinct shade is a separate screen, and a separate pass in the procedure. As a result of this fine art operation, each color is flawlessly reproduced. Sericels are also created in limited.  Quantities, typically 2500 to 5000 pieces and sometimes even 9500. Because of their larger edition size, sericels are the most affordable type of animation art, ideal for the beginning collector.
