The following listing is for an antique painting. The portrait is of a woman that, based on the research I've done, I believe to be a relative of Daniel Chester French, famous artist and sculptor. It has a typed card in the right hand bottom corner with the following information on it~~~'Elizabeth Bridges French gave this to me to bring home, one time when I was in Hopkinton. I do not know who it is. The frame may be of value though.' This is signed with the typed initials F.W.F. Since Daniel Chester French grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, which is in the general area of Hopkinton, and the painting was found here in the Berkshires where his summer home of Chesterwood is, I feel it is safe to assume there is a connection. Furthermore, I removed the painting from the frame and the back is signed, W.M.H., which may indicate William Morris Hunt, of Brattleboro, Vermont, who was closely associated with Daniel Chester French, having given him drawing lessons, which gives more validity to the probability that this is a family member of French's. I purchased this from a well known Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts (name will be provided to the buyer, if desired). The portrait is very well done, with great detail. I have chosen watercolor as the medium in item specifics, but this may be considered mixed media? I have represented the painting to the best of my ability, but I am not an art expert, so please feel free to ask questions or offer opinions. The frame is just beautiful as well, with multifaceted construction. It's put together with early square nails. There are later (but still older) finish nails securing the back, someone apparently having removed the painting previously. This is in very good condition. There is a small amount of faint water damage in the lower left corner. A bit of the matting is torn. There is a slight split in the wood by one finish nail on the back. I've shown these imperfections in the photos. The patina on the frame, a combination of natural finish, black paint, and gold leaf, is fabulous! The frame measures approximately 15 3/4" wide by 18 1/2" high.
