The one volume edition of the greatest classic of the Civil War, selected and edited by Ned Bradford
The autobiography of the Civil War, as told by the men who lived it and fought it……
Former enemies, Civil War commanders from the North and South, were bought together on the high ground of history to write this great work. Publishing history was made when it appeared originally in the late 1880’s . The greatest repository of firsthand testimony by actual contenders, Now compressed into a single volume Battles and Leaders of the Civil War remains the authentic source book on the Civil War.
Lee, Jackson, Grant, Sherman, Longstreet, J E B Stuart – their names live again in their own accounts written by men who rode with them, shared their campfires and their intimate trials.
The Chaplin who prayed while Stonewall Jackson died – the cavalryman who rode with dashing J E B Sturart the prisoner who threw himself down to die after Gettysburg – the general who watched old men and children defend Atlanta – the man who sat in the turret of the Monitor as it fought the Merrimac – the volunteer who marched through Georgia with Sherman – the officer who watched Robert E Lee surrender - these and dozens of others give their own eye – witness accounts of how it really was, what it really meant to fight the battles of the Civil War.
The most exciting accounts of the War have been selected for this edition. Numerous repetitious battle descriptions , included in earlier editions, have been eliminated. Chapters tabulating the names of regiments and individuals have been dropped, as well as less colorful articles and reports on some minor campaigns.
A singular record of war and men, of human contrasts, remarkable for its amazing breadth of life –Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is a tremendously interesting and readable collection. A running commentary by Ned Bradford, the Editor, makes this volume in effect a history of the Civil War told in a new form.
