Passunari
temple Guardian
The Balinese have many deitys and lesser deitys. This Passunari is a lesser god meant to watch over the temple of Shiva or the Puri Dalam known as the Shiva temple .
This piece is part of my own collection. Not exactly sure of the age. I would say between 30 - 40 years old. The wooden temple guardians are slowly being replaced in Bali by stone carved guardians because they last longer. Soon wooden guardians will be no more!
This piece is in good shape, there are a few grain cracks that I have pictured below. This is an exceptional piece. The carving on the crown and base are really nicely detailed. The wings are removeable. I am not sure of the wood, but it is very heavy and dense. I would guess it is cempaka wood. That is often used in this type of carving.
This  piece measures
8" X 9" base
20" tall
16" wing span
